What are the best massage products to use?

Kathryn Ellis

An essential part of a successful massage is using the right massage medium. For example, should you use massage lotion, massage oil, massage wax or something else entirely.

But with such an array of professional massage products available on the market, it can be a bit overwhelming for a beginner to decide where to start.

Do I use wax or oil? Which brands are worth buying, and which aren’t? Below are three of my favourites that I use in my massages.

Oh, and a disclaimer. This is by no means an exhaustive list of the products available, and experienced massage therapists will have their own preferences when it comes to what they use. This is just a suggestion to help those looking for somewhere to start.

Songbird Massage Wax

Songbird makes a great wax that provides excellent grip when applied. Their products may seem quite expensive out of the gate but a little goes a long way, meaning it’s actually very economical in the long run.

The wide range of products gives great variety, and they smell nice as well!

I personally like to use the Songbird Liquiwax range. It provides enough purchase without being too greasy.

Here are my three current favourite scents:

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is ideal for when you want something which has more glide. For example, when you’re doing a hot stone massage.

The fact that it is natural is one of its best qualities, so try to go for something without artificial additives if possible.

The natural quality of coconut oil means that very few people are likely to have allergic reactions. So this could be a good choice for clients who have adverse reactions to other professional massage products.

Coconut oil also has the advantage of being edible, although I wouldn't suggest eating any in the middle of a massage!

Biotone Massage Gel

I think this is one of the best massage products on the market. This gel lasts for absolutely ages due to its superior glide, without soaking into the skin or leaving any greasy residue like some others do.

This one may be slightly harder to get your hands on than some of the others, but like the Songbird Liquiwax the high upfront cost is easily mitigated by the long term savings.

There we have it, three different types of massage products that I’ve found to be the best in class. Don’t be afraid to experiment with others to find what works for you, but if you’re looking for somewhere to start you can’t go far wrong with these!
