Our Swedish Massage course for beginners

Kathryn Ellis

You may have noticed we offer a Swedish massage course which is a course for complete beginners who would like to become massage therapists.

However, we understand that the Swedish Massage course is an investment of your time and money. And we also understand that there are other similar courses out there too.

So we created this blog post to help you understand everything you need to know before buying a massage course for beginners.

We want you to make the right choice. So this article is an unbiased look at our Swedish Massage course to make sure it’s the right fit for you.

What is our Swedish Massage course?

Our Swedish Massage course is a fully-accredited professional course that equips you to set yourself up as a professional massage therapist, to get insurance to work, and to earn enough to have a successful career as a therapist.

Swedish Massage is often regarded as the basic massage training course from which to build your other massage techniques. It’s the most commonly used qualification type for body massage that provides an excellent platform for further learning.

It’s a very popular form of massage with clients and is highly sought-after. You’ll never be short of clients when you offer Swedish Massage!

Why we created our Swedish Massage course

We offer a number of CPD (continuing professional development) courses for massage therapists who have to be qualified to level 3. However, we were getting lots of interest from people who didn’t have the qualification and were interested in training with us.

We also found that a lot of therapists hadn’t learned very good body mechanics in their training and were suffering from exhaustion or pain from over-use of thumbs and shoulders.

So we wanted to provide a basic massage training course that focused on good technique from the very beginning - to avoid developing bad habits.

What is included in our Swedish Massage course

It is a 200-hour intensive Level 3 Certificate course that runs over six days in total, including your assessment and feedback day. In all, the course runs over 3-4 months, after which you’ll be able to start working as a therapist - and charging for your massages.

This is the perfect course for complete beginners and includes six days of hands-on massage training. For those who do not have an existing Anatomy & Physiology qualification, this can be completed online at the same time.

You’ll learn:

  1. All the massage basics, including different massage techniques for all the body and when to use them.
  2. Good client-care and how to communicate with your clients
  3. The best equipment to use and products to buy
  4. Great towel-techniques so you can ensure your client’s modesty throughout the treatment
  5. How to set yourself up as a therapist and to create a successful business
  6. How to follow-up after a treatment and to ensure your clients return again and again
  7. Self-care - how to look after yourself as a therapist and to ensure you can have a long-lasting career

Why study Swedish Massage at Central School of Massage?

Low student to teacher ratio: sometimes you can get lost or overlooked in a class and it can often seem like the teacher doesn’t have time to give you enough attention.

Our classes have a maximum of six students for each intake. You will not get overlooked! Our small numbers mean we can give everyone the attention they need.

Expert instruction: the teachers at Central School of Massage are also currently practising therapists. This is not book-learning! We bring real-world learning into our classroom and show you how to work in a way that will truly help you with your future clients.

High quality equipment: you’ll get to work on and use the same equipment we use as therapists. There’s no need to bring your own massage couch or covers/towels/blankets; we provide everything you’ll need for learning in the classroom.

Recognised qualification: Our course is fully accredited by FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapists), one of the leading organisations for monitoring and awarding professional qualifications in the therapy world.

How much does the Swedish Massage Course cost?

Our course costs £1395 which includes all tuition on the training days, examination fees for the final assessment and personal one-to-one feedback. You also have access to the practical training on video. Students generally find this invaluable to help them when practising the techniques at home. Included within the course is a level 3 Anatomy and Physiology online course (provided by a separate company).

Why is the cost £1395?

We wanted to offer a course that’s affordable for you. Our intention is to get you up and running as a therapist and to be able to earn your money back within a few months.

There are cheaper courses available; however, many of them are not full, professional qualifications (level 3 or equivalent) and only allow you to work on friends and family.

Is there a refund policy?

We ask that you give us a non-refundable deposit to guarantee your place. As our numbers are so small, we are not able to give refunds. Your place on the course is transferrable however, so if you can find someone to take your place, we’re happy for them to step in.

Once we’ve started the course, we’re not able to offer a refund for your fees as you are given all the course material upfront. If you’re unable to complete the course (due to illness or sudden bereavement for example), we can discuss your options with you which might mean deferring to a future course.

Who is this for?

This course is not for everyone and we only want you to buy it if it’s right for you.

This is for you if:

  1. You’re passionate about helping others
  2. You have a keen interest in health and well-being
  3. You’re looking to find a new career and would like to work for yourself
  4. You want to find balance in your work/home life
  5. You want to be in control of your own time and not be a wage-slave

Who is this not for?

This course is not for you if you want a get-rich-quick and are only interested in making money. If you’re not a “people-person” and don’t enjoy working with others, then this is not the course or career path for you.

Be prepared to work hard and spend time learning and practising your new skills. You will have a lot of fun along the way, but if you’re not willing to put the time into the practice, then this won’t work for you.

How long will it take to be able to work as a qualified therapist?

The course will take roughly three-four months from beginning to end. You will need to complete all the case-studies and successfully pass the exams and complete the Anatomy course before fully qualifying. Then you can set yourself up in business as a massage therapist, and charge for your treatments.

What will I need to get started?

You won’t need anything to get started. However, you will have to buy some equipment in order to do your practice sessions in-between the lessons. We will discuss this in full on the first day of training.

Who is your teacher?

The course is led by Kathryn Ellis who has been running massage courses since 2009. A full-time massage therapist since 2007, Kathryn is highly sought-after for her treatments as well as her courses.

She set up the Central School of Massage in 2009 and has trained many hundreds of therapists, ranging in ability and experience from absolute beginners through to therapists with 20+ years' experience.

Kathryn was an official speaker at the 2019 Holistic Health Fair, and runs CPD (continuing professional development) massage courses for the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT).

Where does the course take place?

All our courses take place in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, which is about 10 miles from Coventry, Rugby and Stratford-upon-Avon. We have a purpose-built yoga and massage studio, a large log cabin in the garden. With underfloor heating and roof-lights, the room is flooded with light whilst being cosy and warm.

What do previous students say about this course?

"I recently completed my Swedish Massage training with Kathryn and Karen. Both were fantastic teachers who really took the time to support and coach me. Genuinely cannot wait to take other courses with them and learn more. Highly recommend the Central School of Massage to anyone looking for professionals who are knowledgeable, inspiring and most importantly fun! Thank you so much Kathryn and Karen!” Amy G

“I recently completed a Swedish Massage course with the Central School of Massage and would thoroughly recommend to anyone who is considering learning a new skill.  The course was very well run and enjoyable with the right amount of  practical and theory.” Ema F

"I completed the Swedish Massage course and could not recommend Kathryn and Karen enough. As a registered health professional, it felt important for me to learn about massage through credible practitioners. Kathryn and Karen taught and shared their knowledge and experience, with approaches that are akin to the direction that want to work. It is early days for me, but so far, feedback that I have had from clients has been excellent, and I can credit Central School Massage for this. Thanks very much!” Sarah C
